well first off I use the concept method because I can't remeber the numbers. not smart enough.
As far as teaching it goes we break down the entire concept into segments
I'l Use the Mesh as an example
the very first thing i work on with this play is getting the rec. to run the mesh routes at the proer depth and get the proper mesh point and teach them who sets the mesh depth. then we teach them how to read the coverage if its zone we teach them were to sit, if its man we teach them to read that and continue their route with a slight bend up field. we Practice this concept over and over again. All receivers and backs practice this because I can tag any of them to run the Mesh in any formation using motion and so on. We eventually expand the routes by tagging othe routes to the play posts/ corners/ hooks and digs or a choice route where the REC read the middle of the field and run a post or a corner.
i'll give you some of my plays tags so u get the idea
Pistol stack Y/W Mesh Z Post X Fade
Pistol Stack W/H Mesh Y Dig Z Corner X Post
Pistol Stack Zip exit X/Z Mesh Y Choice W Corner
one of the main reasons that I use this system is that alot of the routes i run are very different from the usual routes in a tree. I don't know how you would number the mesh and a choice route without having to create a very indepth passing tree.
The Bottom line is we take time on these concepts
Mesh
Shallow
Smash
Drive
Flood
Cross
Spacing
Stick
Hitch
Slant
10 passing concepts or plays that I can taylor evey week by formation and motion to get mismatches and advantage versus coverage.
