Pistol Flexbone Questions

Postby Daryl Stewart on Tue Dec 16, 2008 6:53 am

Im a ride or die flexbone option guy. However, it seems I am not a good enough coach to teach my QB's to be efficient enough in the passing game. We have given them simple hi/low and playaction stuff the past couple of years and we basically stink at it. I was lookin for a way to simplify the deal without getting in the gun when I came across Coach Pratleys offense. It allows me to keep the basic principle of our offense the same while cutting down on the QB's learning curve by shortning his drops and allowing more practice on reads and such. Atleast this is how the QB's look at it.

My questions will mainly revolve around the timing of the offense in the option game.
1. Does it hit as fast
2. What adjustments have to be accounted for
3. What is the depth of the QB and B back in this deal
4. Who has the best resources on this stuff

These are just a few that will get me started

In my opinion, it hits just as quick as it did under center. It actually becomes an easier read for the QB. We have our QB at 3 and the Back at 5. We have our QB step forward on the snap and attack the read.

I would recommend looking at my new site at http://www.pistolspreadoption.com

A ton of install, playbook and resources.

Coach Pratley,

I read a Feb. post that said you would use more zone scheme this year. Did you? And why?

We did. We actually switched to all zone, basically because it is easier for our kids to grasp. It worked out very well.

Coach does that mean you were not an option team or just that you were zone read? Was it part of your progression that ultimately led to the zone being better from the pistol? Was/is it a personnel issue?

No. We were an option team, we just used Zone blocking principles and merged them together.
