Canadain rules Pistol

Postby voodoo83 on Tue Nov 03, 2009 4:57 am

Hey everyone I'm new to the site but I thought I would share this.

The team I coach recently added a pistol package. After I did some reading on the pistol the other offensive coaches and myself thought it would be a nice way to spread out the field a little bit. Now your probably wondering ( or not) why is this worth writing. The reason I'm posting is that we are a high school team in Ontario Canada. For those of you who are not familiar with the Canadian football, ill give you some basic differences between Canadian and American football. Firstly we have 3 downs instead of 4, We have 12 men on the field, and we are allowed to send multiple men in motion at the same time.

Now I'm gonna get down to some X and Os our teams base set is the wishbone, 2 TE and a slot receiver. When we added the pistol we move our play side running back out wide. and everyone in the backfield shifted back. See attachment file. Because of Canadian rules it allows to shift between the two set after the Defense has called in its play.

Thought I'd share if anyone has questions I'd love to talk about them. If there are any other Canadian teams out there who rule a pistol I'd love to talk.

Coach Pat

I'm not sure what your looking for, so I'm going to give you the some of the basics we do out of our pistol.

We use a basic hole labeling system ( 1 3 5 7 - left 2 4 6 8 -right) We also label our Qb the 1 back, the FB is the 2 back, and the tail back is the 4. We also use a passing tree for our passing routes. ( #s = passing patterns)

In the formation I shared with you last post, We've found that with that leads through the off tackle wholes work nicely ( your RB may have to belly step) We call that formation the Pistol Jumbo twins left or right. Other things we do out of that formation is 2 back dives as far as running goes.We also like to pitch to the twins side. One of our most successful plays was a 46 lead Cross block. We had our Tackle down block on and the Guard looped around and up sealing inside. The lead then went though a very wide open 6 whole. We used a simple running game to hit big play action passes

We also have a Pistol wing formation, its alot more spread out. It uses 3 WR 1 RB and a wing back ( a rb in the slot) have a lot more plays variation out of that formation. Such things as jet sweeps, triple options as well as the basics dive and passing plays. We use different blocking sets in this scheme so if your interested send me a message.

If you want to talk more reply in this thread or send me an email patrickcarr_1@hotmail.com" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false.
