1st year installing

Need help with installing the pistol? Here is the place to ask.

1st year installing

Postby CoachQ on Thu Jun 26, 2008 2:05 am

As I have said in previous post we are installing the pistol for the first time this year. We are a 7th and 8th grade team. Thus far we plan we plan to install these runnning plays: zone read, power, counter, stretch, and jet. Does anyone run any two back lead/iso in the pistol? Any help would be appreciated with what we plan to install.

We are a Varsity team and only run 6 plays. Veer, Option, Counter option, Iso, Trap, and Zone Read.

They all are basically the same footwork for the QB and HB. We try to make all of the plays look the same to the Defense.

KISS.... Keep It Simple Stupid.... and believe me, I fit the bill.

We have the ISO from a 2x2 or 3x1 Set with the Slot in Half Motion (Near to the Tailback) that gives us a kind of I-Formation and by getting in motion we see if the defense is in Zone!

Thanks for your help coaches. Coach Pratley I will keep the KISS method and choosing the plays that look the same to the "D". Do either of you mind sharing your counter play and iso plays.

Coach W, could you show me how you are running your inside zone (if you are at all).....we are mostly a doubles pistol ace formation team. I would be interested in seeing your PA off it as well. Thanks in advance.

Pay: We do not run the IZ at all - Sorry to say but I do not like that play!

For PA we will go from the ISO / BLAST play or from the counter we will fake a JET with the Slot Receiver.

IMO, I think the inside zone play is very nice-I guess it comes down to preferance and personel. That being said, why have you stayed away from it?

Because my Lineman personal is not used to blocking zone! We are a 80% Pass Team, we will only run the ball if we have 3/4 and short or Goalline - And then only if we have to, if the Screen is open or the slant we will take that every time!

I know that is not that is maybe not the real answer but I just never liked the Zone Plays! Sorry, can't give you a real ecplanation but if the zone works for you and your team keep going because alot of teams have trouble defending it!

For your pass game then, what do you mostly use? Quick game? Sprint out?

Quick Game 70% of the time, we only have 2 Sprint outs (1 on the Option Fake, and one on a Dive Fake) in our league most of the defenses will give you the short yard pass, and we will take that... Hopefully with some YAC :D

Mesh, Y-Stick, and lately I liked the shoot route alot!!
